My Personal Statement of Purpose: Why I want to be a Pharmacist
To be an effective pharmacist, an individual must not simply possess a sense of personal interest in the scientific aspects of the medical field. A pharmacist must also be a compassionate and concerned human being. An effective pharmacist must be willing to extend a patient ear to the concerns of the individual seeking appropriate medical advice regarding his or her medication.
A majored in biochemistry in college and excelled academically, except for my senior year, due to difficult family circumstances. I was and a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society. Thus, my passion for medical and pharmaceutical science is evident from my resume and my transcript. But I am also a human being who has learned from adversity. My senior year's grades were affected by my parent's divorce. The divorce plunged both my father and mother into states of clinical depression and forced me to work in my family's restaurant to keep my family financially afloat, I found reserves of resilience and compassion within myself, even though my GPA suffered.
This ability to learn from adversity will stand me well in the graduate study of pharmacy. My work in the restaurant taught me how serving others can fulfill my sense of self as well as learning about the research aspects of science. Service remains an important aspect of the pharmacy profession. Serving the public, I have learned over this past year, is equally as crucial to my sense of esteem as to learn about the scientific aspects of health. The fact I am bilingual and also have a rudimentary grasp of sign language are an additional asset to my ability to excel as a pharmacist. I have volunteered as a pharmacy assistant as well as worked in service capacities as a technical assistant, a waitress, and taught Sunday school. I believe that my personal experiences, academic pursuits and passions, and personal characteristics will all combine to make me an ideal candidate for entry into pharmacy school and later into my future desired profession as a pharmacist.
